NW Okie's Journey

We continue this week with old news clippings from 1884 concerning the January, 1884 Lynching of E. D. Atchison near Monterey, Virginia. Back in 2011 I received research from Michael Sellers with his research he had done on the lynching. You can find that information in my OkieLegacy Ezine/Tabloid at the following links: Vol. 11, Iss. 41 and Vol. 14, Iss. 20

Walking With Sweet Silly Sadie Dawg

Woof! Woof! My human co-editor had me checking out a political party that was formed in Virginia around 1879. It was the "Readjuster Party." There was another organized political group of Highland County, Virginia that went by the name of the "Bourbon Democracy of Highland County, Virginia (known as "Bourbonism)." The term "Bourbon" was once used to describe Democratic leaders who succeeded Republican Radicals and Carpetbaggers in Southern State governments in the years following the Civil War.

1884 Highland Lynching

It was in the Richmond, Virginia newspaper, The Richmond Dispatch, dated 11 January 1884, Friday, page 3, that we found this Highland county lynching of January, 1884.

Lynching A Republican (1884)

Continuing our research of the E. D. Atchison lynching of January, 1884, near Monterey, Virginia, we found this mention of E. D. Atchison lynching in an Angola, Indiana newspaper, Steuben Republican, dated Wednesday, 6 February 1884, page 3, under the following headlines: "Democratic Victories, A Vermont Republican Lynched at Monterey, VA., by a Democratic Mob. The Office of a Coalition Newspaper in Virginia Wrecked by a Bourbon Bomb. Lynching a Republican."

The Illinois newspaper writer about this Virginia lynching was mentioned in a Staunton, Virginia newspaper of March 1884, of falsely trying to blame the Atchison lynching on the Bourbon Democracy of Virginia.

1884 - Bourbon Ways

As our research continues with The Inter Ocean, Chicago, Illinois, dated Wednesday, 23 January 1884, page 9, we learn of the "Bourbon Ways" and "Another Republican Murdered in Virginia," concerning the Monterey lynching of January 1884 of E. D. Atchison. Was the Chicago newspaper writer unfairly trying to blame the Atchison lynching on the Bourbon Democracy of Virginia?

1884 - A Midnight Struggle For Life

Yet another version of the Monterey, Virginia lynching of January, 1884 could be found in The Evening Bulletin, Maysville, Kentucky, dated 12 January 1884, Saturday, on page 1, with the following headlines: "A Midnight Struggle For Life." Wounded and bleeding, a prisoner was finally overpowered and lynched.

1884 - False Charge Corrected

It was in the Staunton Spectator, Staunton, Virginia, dated 25 March 1884, Tuesday, page 3, that we found this mention of the E. D. Atchison lynching: "False Charge Corrected."

It seemed that a writer from the Chicago Tribune had written and attributed the lynching of E. D. Atchison in Highland county as a Bourbon murder. He said, "Atchison was hanged, not for cutting Ruckman, but because he was a Vermont man and a Republican, and this dastardly act must be charged to the Bourbon Democrats of Highland county."
