1912, Rush Is On For Oil Leases

It was in the Muskogee Times Democrat, Muskogee, Oklahoma, dated 23 July 1912, Tuesday, page 1, we found this headline: "Rush Is On For Oil Leases."

Copies of the regulations which governed the leasing of lands in the Osage reservation were received in muskogee Wednesday and the race was no on for the acquiring of what was considered by many the most valuable oil territory int he world.

It was expected that considerable of the land would bring a big lease rental in addition to the one-sixth royalty, for it was proven territory with producing oil wells one very direction. About two months before the Uncle Sam Oil company and several affiliated corporations secured lease from the Osage council on all the land which had not been leased, but this was set aside by the interior department and the agent at Pawhuska was instructed to advertise for bids and sell the leases to the highest bidder. Pawhuska the headquarters of the Osages was well filled with oil men and a big fight would soon be on between the independents and the big operations.
