Have you ever heard of Camp Relief at Riverfront Park, Denver, Colorado? By the fall of 1893, a tent city had appeared at Riverfront Park along the South Platte River. Tents were erected to shelter 800 or more persons, and used to large part of the indigent.

[The image on the left shows a Colorado map created in 1894 that shows accurate view of the Colorado mining camps, towns, rivers and mountains. It also shows communities (some ghost towns) that have long since vanished with the prairie winds under the smashing weight of countless winter storms high in the Rockies. A total of 1096 communities were located on this map, more than doubling the number of mining camps and ghost towns.]

It was back in 1893, August 2, Wednesday, in The Advocate And Topeka Tribune, published in Topeka, Kansas, that we found this article, Leaving Colorado. It concerns crowds of hungry miners and other laborers seeking respite from starvation.

100 Years Ago - 1914

It was early in 1914, one of the most violent events in the history of labor strikes in the United States took the lives of men, women and children. Miners on strike and their families had been evicted from their company owned housing and were forced to live in tent colonies.

1916 Forage Crops Are Favored For Hogs

It was 16 April 1916, page 6 of the Tombstone Weekly Epitaph, we find Forage Crops Are Favored For Hogs, written by Andrew Boss, College of Agriculture, University of Minnesota. Clover pasture afforded one of the cheapest substitutes for grain for swine.

WWI: Battle of Verdun

The Battle of Verdun through June 1916 was the longest single battle of World War One. The casualties from Verdun and the impact the battle had on the French Army was a primary reason for the British starting the Battle of the Somme, July 1916, in an effort to take German pressure off the french at Verdun. The Battle of Verdun started on February 21, 1916, ending on December 16, 1916.

Camp Relief of 1893 (Denver, CO)

Camp Relief of Denver, Colorado was one of those comprehensive relief system that included operation of an employment bureau, street work, and the distribution of provisions to approved applicants. In the Summer of 1893, Denver added a camp for the jobless, who governed themselves through semi military rules until rail transport to the East was secured for them.
