NW Okie's Corner

We spent Sunday evening in Trinidad, New Mexico, as I jotted down some notes, stories of our research at the Austin History Center, in Texas and Oklahoma History Center, in Oklahoma City (OKC). We were on the way back to the Southwest corner of the Colorado Rockies, arriving back in Bayfield Monday afternoon.

150th Anniversary of Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863)

Bit you did not realize that July 1st thru July 3rd, is the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg skirmish during the Civil War. We found the following article, dated July 4, 1863, on the front page of the The Daily Ohio Statesman, located in Columbus, Ohio. The headline was under "Telegraphic," with the sub-headlines: "Morning and Noon Dispatches."

Duchess of Weaselskin

"Where oh where as NW Okie and David gone! Where oh where can they be!" says Duchess and Sadie as they search throughout the cabin in Southwest Colorado. Sadie, seated on the right, tilts her head in bewilderment and "The Duchess" lays sprawled on the left.

George Nickel Death, Dec 2, 1941

It was in The Alva Review Courier, dated Sunday, December 7, 1941, Alva, Oklahoma, amongst the front page headlines of Local and National news concerning South Pacific Bases and other local news that we found a death notice for George Nickel, a Former Banker and president of First National bank in Alva.

December, 1941 - Message Sent Japs By FDR

Alva, Oklahoma's newspaper, The Alva-Review Courier, reported, 7 December 1941, on the front page: "Message Sent Japs By FDR, Emperor Hirohito Will Get Note." Washington, Dec. 6 (1941) -- The state department announced that a message was being sent by President Roosevelt to Emperor Hirohito of Japan.

Joan Benson's Attitude Toward Slayer of Brother (1941)

Although showing some change in her attitude, Miss Eva Joan Benson, 15 year old sweetheart of Kenneth Roots, who was in the Woods county jail where he faced charges of murdering her brother collaborated her former statements to County Attorney Bill Gruber in a session behind closed doors Saturday (6 December 1941).

Kenneth Roots Bound Over After Hearing, 12/16/1941

It was in the Tuesday, December 16, 1941, Alva, Oklahoma newspaper that we found the following concerning Kenneth George Roots (17) being bound over to District Court after hearing, to face trial for murder of Donald Benson (22), November 26, 941.

History of Organized Baseball In Texas

From the Austin History Center, Austin, Texas, we found the following news clipping written sometime between 1910-1915. It mentioned organized baseball in Texas dated from the coming to Austin of the "Joplins," twenty-two years ago (1887). This was an aggregation of players, composed of men who had played in the Western league during the season of 1887.

1907 Ball Game Is Remembered

We also found a 1929 article at the Austin History Center when we were searching for information concerning the Austin Senators and anything with the mention of my grandpa, Bill McGill. It had the headlines: "1907 Ball Game Is Remembered," Tilt one of Austin's historic sport events.

15 December 1941 - Kenneth Roots Hearing To Be Held Tuesday

On 15th of December 1941, of the Alva-Review Courier, front page, was the headlines: "Kenneth Roots Hearing To Be Held Tuesday," Persons under the age of 18 years to be excluded. The preliminary hearing for Kenneth Roots, 17 year old youth, who was charged with murder, would be held in the county court before Judge J. J. Glaser starting at 10 o'clock, Tuesday morning.

In the 1941 newspaper of the Alva Review-Courier, dated 15 December 1941, we find that "W. J. Curry Dies Here Monday." Funeral services were be held that Wednesday.

Donald Lee Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elza Benson was born June 18, 1919 and departed this life December 2, 1941 at 10:20 p.m. at the age of 22 years, 5 months and 14 days.
