Duchess of Weaselskin

Our reporter in Northwestern Oklahoma (Alva) reports that it started raining Sunday night around 10:15p.m., and turned to snow around 3a.m. Monday, 25 February 2013. By 10a.m. Monday morning there was an approximate accumulation of 3-inches. The blizzard part of the snow storm began in Alva around 11:30a.m.

84-Hour Blizzard of April, 1938

Anyone out there remember their parents telling them of the 84-hour blizzard of April, 1938? It was April 6 thru 8, 1938 that another blizzard, known as the 84-hour blizzard occurred across the eastern half of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. Leaving in its path 8 deaths (7 in Pampa, 1 in the Oklahoma panhandle.)

Herold-Varner 1936-37 Marriage

The Herold-Varner marriage of 1936 or 1937 took place on a Saturday afternoon, when Johnnie M. Varner, Alva, and Miss Lillian May Herold, Alva, were united in marriage by Judge J. J. Glaser in the Review-Courier's public wedding on the court house steps. The marriage was pronounced by Judge Glaser in the following words:

Comanche Pool

Comanche Pool -- "From Mary Einsel's Kansas, the Priceless Prairie. Each western state has its early history a famous cattle spread that overshadowed all others. Kansas had the Comanche Pool, which was located near Medicine Lodge, the largest cattle ranch in the state's history.

Cheyenne Raid - 1878

Cheyenne Raid 1878 - Transcribed from Vol. I of Kansas: a cyclopedia of state history, embracing events, institutions, industries, counties, cities, towns, prominent persons, etc." When the last of the Indian tribes was removed from Kansas to the Indian Territory, hope was entertained that depredations on the western frontier would cease. But in Sept., 1878, Dull Knife's band of northern Cheyennes, dissatisfied with the rations furnished by the government, decided to return to their former homes.

Ship Europa Summer of 1938

Back in 2002 we were sent an old postcard of the Ship Europa that our Uncle Bob McGill had taken a cruise on in the Summer of 1938 (July). It is amazing that years later people connect through a little postcard, and perhaps a passing connection of ancestors.
