Vernon, Ohio, the frontage headlines were: "Turks Defeated, Seek Mediation," Dam At Gatun Is Almost Completed And soon Water Will Be Turned In," "Wilson Sustains Ugly Scalp Wound," "Windup of Campaign," "Engine Rolls Into River," "Election Predictions of National Chairmen," and "Goes over the Falls."

[Great grandparents, Sarah Frances Conover & Henry Clay Paris, with children: Ernest, Volney, Decatur "Dee," Arthur and Myrtle.]

We have put some of our paternal lineage on here more so than we have shared our maternal lineage. Our maternal ancestry surnames included the following: PARIS, HURT and CONOVER (Van Kouwenhoven, Couwenhoven) connections. We have traced our Van Kouwenhoven back to the 15th Century, Netherlands.

Pendleton County, (West) Virginia

We continue our look into the history of Pendleton County, West Virginia with the school districts of 1846, established by a county order of 8 October 1846. It was the first recorded division of Pendleton into school districts, done in compliance with an Act of assembly establishing public schools.

History of Rockbridge County, Virginia

There is a book entitled History of Rockbridge County, Virginia, compiled, written around 1918, published in 1920, Oren F. Morton. The position of the county is nearly midway in the longer direction of the Valley of Virginia. Rockbridge is an irregular rectangle, the longer direction being nearly northeast and southwest. The length of the county is nearly 32 miles, and the extreme breadth is nearly 26 miles. The area is officially stated as 593 square miles, which is considerably more than is true of the average county in Virginia.

Van Kouwenhoven Family History

The original seat of the Van Kouwenhoven family in the Netherlands was the Castle of Kouwenhoven on the banks of the Dommel River outside the village of Tongerie (near Eindhoven) in Brabant. This village was once the capital of the old Germanic tribe of the Tongeren, called by Caesar in "De Bello Gallico," the Tungu. From earliest feudal times the family owned the village. In the later half of the 15th century the Dukes of Brabant of the Burgand House became lords of all the Netherlands.

1912 October - Taft Loses Heavily On the Early Vote

The front page headlines in The Evening World, out of New York, Tuesday, 5 November 1912, reported that Taft was losing heavily on the early vote; gains for Wilson, big vote for colonel.
