President Ulysses Grant Re-Elected 1872

The voice of the people in 1872's presidential election sent a "Tidal Wave" in earnest for the re-election of President Ulysses S. Grant. This is what The Highland Weekly News, Hillsborough, Ohio, reported on page 2 of the newspaper dated 7 November 1872, Thursday.

Found on Newspapers.com

Grant's Majorities were overwhelming with Massachusetts, 65,000; New York, 40,000; Pennsylvania, 100,000; Ohio, 35,000; Indiana, 20,000; Illinois, 35,000; Iowa, 50,000. They were reporting that "The country's Peace and Prosperity was assured!"

In 1872, the people had spoken, and their voice had decreed in thunder-tones, that the modest hero and wise ruler, Ulysses S. Grant, should guide the old ship of State for four more years longer. Grant and Wilson had certainly carried twenty-seven States, in 1872, having 277 electoral votes and Greeley and Brown four States, leaving 6 in which the result was not yet known. The four States which gave Greeley majorities were Maryland, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee, having in all 39 electoral votes. The six doubtful States were Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Florida, Missouri and Nevada, and of these Grant was expected to carry a majority. Back in 1872, the entire electoral vote was 366 - necessary to elect was 184. But G=President Gen. Grant had already 277, certain, which would increase to 311, leaving Greeley only 55.
