1903 - Territories League In Oklahoma And Indian Territories

Let us go back to 1903 September 24th, Thursday, page 7 of the Muskogee Phoenix, Muskogee, Oklahoma, to look into the effort to organize baseball circuit in Oklahoma and Indian Territories.

This was when an effort was being made to organize an Indian Territory-Oklahoma baseball league in 1904 with Vinita, Muskogee, Durant, Tishomingo, Shawnee, Chandler and Oklahoma City on the circuit. The movement had been on foot, it was said, for some time, and the managers of the teams in the towns named were enthusiastic over the project.

With eight good cities on the circuit it would make one of the best small leagues going as many professional ball players were then located in the Territory. It would create a greater interest in the national game int he territories and, in a way, would attract much outside interest from the states.

Just who was booming the league proposition was not definitely known, but the Vinita citizens were talking it up and even suggesting the getting up of a subscription list on the season ticket plan to support the players from there. A season ticket was to cost ten dollars, and would not only permit the holder to see all the games, but at the same time would cause greater interest, and better ball would result.
