The Season...

Football was a big feature in Northwestern in nineteen sixteen. With Spot Geyer, O. U.'s famous all round football man as coach, the team soon whipped into shape, and although for the most part made up of new material, they soon developed into a scoring machine that was hard to stop. The defense soon began to be strong, because of the strong offense.

This score shows that although the eleven did not start very strong, they were progressive, making rapid strides in development from game to game.

N. S. N. achieved second place among the Normal Schools this year, Edmond being the only school, in her class to beat her. It was very doubtful if Edmond could have faced the Rangers, at the last of the season.

Several brilliant men showed up this season. Among the stars were Wilcox, Julian, Smithson, Burns, Arganbright, and Ralph Beegle, who was elected captain for next season. "Beefy" is a husky man, a good leader, and a steady, consistent player. It is expected that with his three year's experience on the Ranger team, "Beefy" will lead the nineteen seventeen team through a successful season, to the State's Championship.

Wearers of the "N"...

Ike Julian, Captain - Ike was the oldest veteran of the team, receiving his fourth stripe this season. At fullback he played a beady, dependable game.
Ralph Beegle - At tackle "Beefy" was a power of strength in the line. His consistency and grit make him the player that he is and for his all-round work he was chosen captain for 1917.
Fant Word - At right guard Word was always in the game. He received his third stripe this year, and is one of N.S.N.'s strongest football men.
Wilbur Wilcox
- Wilcox at tackle proved to be one of the best men in the State. He was always there when it came time to get his opponent, and he could carry the ball for good gains on "tackle around" plays.
Harry Soliday
- "Solly" was always on the job at guard. This is his second year with the varsity squad and he made himself worthy of the honor of wearing an "N".
Bert Raney
- Bert at halfback could carry the ball for consistent gains. Toward the latter part of the season the long Texan's work was invaluable to the squad.
Bonnie Stewart
- Another on of those invincile Ranger squad. Stewart could carry the ball well, and has a well educated toe.
John Hicks
- The "Jeff" of the Ranger squad played remarkably strong at left end. John will be a Senior next year.
Carl Smithson
- Carl Smithson is only a Freshman, but he can surely play football. He is speedy and always good for gains. No doubt Smithson will be one of Northwestern's greatest football players before many years.
Floyd Porter
- Porter, another Freshman, made a good showing this year at N.S.N. Porter is the "Mutt" of the squad. He tackles well, but he has to bend over a long way to do it.
Frank Cleckler
- cleck tried his hand at a number of positions on the squad and finally settled down at center. Cleck will be back next year, and we are expecting great things from him.
